Baltic countries will cautiously ease covid-19 emergency restrictions
The prime ministers of the three Baltic countries of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia met by videoconference on April 22 and agreed to have their respective foreign ministers work toward restoring free movement at least among the three nations, which have closed their borders for several weeks because of the covid-19 pandemic.
Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš, Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis and Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas agreed to confer again the week of April 27 on regional infrastructure and energy issues and the path to economic recovery once the covid-19 emergency restrictions in their countries are eased or lifted.
The three countries have already separately started taking cautious steps to ease emergency restrictions on business activities and individual behavior imposed to limit the spread of the covid-19 virus.
The moves come both as infection rates seem to be leveling off in all three countries and the economic impact and cost of the emergency lockdowns and restrictions increase from week to week.
Latvia saw 17 new infections as of April 23 for a total of 778. A total of 11 persons have died of the virus. In Estonia, there were 33 new cases for a total of 1592. 45 people have died in Estonia. The virus was diagnosed…
